MAYOR’S ENGAGEMENTS
September 2010
I was born in Worcester in 1932, which qualifies me as a Senior Citizen. I was educated at a local infant and Junior school, and won a scholarship to the Worcester Royal Grammar School, which I left at 16, after failing the School Certificate examination.
I trained as a motor mechanic until call-up at 18, where I served for 8 years in the RAF, which I represented in Cross-country Running. On leaving the RAF, I joined my father’s Silverware Manufacturing business.
I met Jan in 1965, in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Operatic Society, in Birmingham, where she was a Theatre Sister, and we married in 1968. I then joined the Rover Co, in the Technical Service Dept, eventually becoming Regional Manager.
We have 2 sons, Mark, born in 1970, and Iain, born in 1971.Between them they gave us 4 grandchildren.
In 1977, we moved to Tanzania, where I was Group Service and Assembly Plant Manager at the East African Land Rover Distributors, until 1981. We then moved to the Middle East, living in Bahrain and Dubai, leaving in 1986, when jobs were localised.
Returning to the UK , we bought a Convenience Store, where we stayed until retirement in 2002. We then “found” Felixstowe, fell in love, and moved to Walton, where we still live. I can’t think of anywhere else that I would rather be.
I was elected to the Felixstowe Town Council 1n 2007, in South ward, and was asked to be Deputy Mayor in 2009 – 10, and was elected Mayor in May 2010, of which I am very proud.
