Flying the Flag for the UK’s Best Green Spaces

Today a record number of parks and green spaces collect  Green Flag Award across the UK.

Joining them are Felixstowe’s Seafront Gardens!

They are among a record-breaking 1,797 UK parks and green spaces to receive the prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.

This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.

Felixstowe’s Seafront Gardens was given a £4.8million refurbishment, paid for by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Suffolk Coastal District Council, to restore the site to its former glory. The work regenerated and revitalised the attraction for tourists and residents alike.

The seafront gardens have also been given Green Heritage site accreditation for their interpretation of the historic features and standards of conservation.

Cllr TJ Haworth-Culf, Suffolk Coastal’s cabinet member for customers, communities and leisure, said: “This is the second year that the restored Seafront Gardens have been open to the public and they are looking wonderful. The gardens are the jewel in the crown of a vibrant Felixstowe seafront and we are absolutely delighted that they have been recognised for the second year.”

“I should particularly mention the hard work and dedication of the Friends of the Felixstowe Seafront Gardens and Suffolk Coastal Norse for all their continued hard work in keeping the gardens looking so good.”

“We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for a second time, which recognises and highlights that people in Felixstowe are benefitting from a green space of the very highest quality, which also complements the many other good things happening

in Felixstowe at the moment, such as the new seafront events area, Martello Park development and much, much more.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme.

“Each flag is a celebration of the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. The success of the scheme, especially in these challenging times, demonstrates just how much parks matter to people.”
